I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on how the season has gone in my first year at the Club.
It started well with us going 12 games unbeaten in the league (6 wins and 6 draws). I think you would agree many of those draws should have been wins but our lack of experience showed. We were playing attacking and attractive football, scoring lots of goals but letting them in the other end at the same time which caused problems.
We did try to address this with various signings at centre half but injuries and players moving on didn’t help the squad overall. I though the squad was very young and talented but when the winter months arrived needed more experience to help them out – which sounds easy to resolve but trust me it isn’t! You need the right type of player coming to help the existing players.
The run we endured over and after Christmas is where the season has cost us, we lost players through injury, suspensions and leaving. Some of you may consider that if some players that left, had instead remained, we would have still kept in the pack. All I will say is that I only want players who want to take this club forward, are here for the right reasons and don’t think they are bigger than the club, no matter how long they been here.
Back in November, Bromsgrove Rovers rang up asking for permission to speak to me about taking up the manager’s position. It was flattering to be asked and it would have been easy to take up the opportunity, as I’m very ambitious to progress. I honestly believe that here at Stratford we have a Board that want to progress and move forward. We have great potential to attract good support if we can get a team to be successful.
I would like to thank you, the supporters, for the support you have shown me. There will be some of you who don’t believe in me as a manager, there will be the vast majority of you who do and have been fantastic to the players as well.
As this season ends today I am already planning for next season. I will be very busy in the close-season bringing in better and more experienced players. I honestly believe that with the Ground and facilities we now have will help me bring that type of player in.
I hope you all have a nice summer and I look forward to seeing you in pre-season. I have managed to attract some very good pre-season friendlies here at Knights Lane – please check the Club website for confirmed dates
